Education

As part of the diversification of its activities in the 2000s, the Medine Group embarked upon the creation of a master plan to guide the development of the 10,000 hectares of land owned by the company and strategically located on Mauritius’ west coast. The Medine Master Plan was first published in 2005. It then underwent a series of transformations to take it in a strategic new direction, towards the creation of a Smart City with a central focus on education. The Smart City places particular emphasis on higher education via the creation of an integrated and international Education Hub targeting the African continent.

  • Higher Education

Today, our Higher Education offer spearheads and represents the flagship programme of the Uniciti Education Hub. 1,700 students are enrolled in prominent international institutions that make up the Hub.

Vatel, SUPINFO and ESCP Europe joined the Hub in 2013 and 2014. The ICSIA (International Campus for Sustainable and Innovative Africa) project, launched in 2015, brings together France’s most prestigious schools and universities. These include ESSEC, the oldest and best known of France’s business schools; law school Université Panthéon-Assas Paris II; the Ecole Centrale de Nantes, one of France’s top seven engineering schools; and Nantes’ renowned Ecole Nationale d’Architecture (ENSA). Middlesex University also kicked off its first academic year on its Uniciti Education Hub campus in end September, adding another thousand students those already enrolled at Assas, ESCP Europe, ENSA Nantes, ESSEC, Vatel and SUPINFO.

While some courses are still held on the Pierrefonds campus a few minutes away by car, all of the Hub’s students enjoy preferential access to all the Smart City’s new infrastructure, which include a restaurant and university residences. A fully-equipped sports centre boasting a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool will be added in the coming weeks, followed by several hectares of parkland and an arts and cultural centre. In the medium term, the Smart City’s tertiary institutions will all based at Uniciti.

The Medine Group’s ambition for Higher Education alone is for the "Uniciti Education Hub" to welcome 5,000 students by 2025, of which 75% would ideally be foreigners – mainly from the African continent – and 25% would be from Mauritius.
